Everest The ultimate peak, the ultimate trek is not for the faint of heart. The trek to Everest Base Camp(EBC), the most iconic base camp at the foot of the tallest mountain in the world was made famous by Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953, when they first reached its rocky base, and its siren call has been heard by trekkers and climbers ever since. Everest’s famous summit soars so high in the Himalayan sky that trekking to its base is still a hearty adventure and not for weekend walkers.
From Khatmandu, the capital of Nepal you will take a short and spectacular flight to Lukla from where your trek to everest base camp begins!
Follow the iconic trails to Everest Base Camp
Taking us to the most iconic base camp of all, at the foot of the greatest mountain in the world, Mount Everest (8848m), this is one of the world’s classic treks. Walking through Sherpa country past cultivated fields and small villages, we have time to acclimatise before reaching spectacular high altitude scenery: the incredible monastery at Thyangboche, views of Ama Dablam, Everest and other mighty Himalayan peaks. As well as reaching Base Camp, we have the opportunity to climb Kala Pattar (5545m) for a magnificent view of the highest mountain on Earth.
The best times to go are from March to May and from September to December though you will find people trekking here throughout the year. In the winters though, weather could get very rough some times resulting in shut down of the lodges in higher altitudes. So you will have to be prepared and carry your own tents and some extra clothes to stay warm. During monsoons (July to September), it could be pouring on most days with the peaks disappearing in clouds and a chance of landslides occurring on some routes. So pre-monsoon and post-monsoon is the best time to do the Everest base camp trek.
Most nationalities require a visa for Nepal, which can be obtained in advance or on entry. There are no mandatory vaccination requirements. Recommended vaccinations are: Polio, Tetanus, Diphtheria, Typhoid, Hepatitis A. The risk of malaria is present in certain regions only (such as Chitwan); you may wish to consult your GP or travel health clinic for further advice. Dengue fever is a known risk in places visited. It is a tropical viral disease spread by daytime biting mosquitoes. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available for Dengue, and therefore the best form of prevention is to avoid being bitten. We recommend you take the usual precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Most of our trips to Nepal go to high altitudes where there is a risk of being affected by Acute Mountain Sickness. Our itineraries are designed to enable everyone to acclimatise to these altitudes, but you should be aware that it is still possible for you to be affected.
For those confident of their physical fitness this is a challenging trek (level 5) with a chance to walk to Base Camp and ascend Kala Pattar, from where we get superb close-up views of the highest mountains in the world. There are 12 days point-to-point walking with full porterage throughout – you need only carry your daypack. You should have some previous trekking experience and if you do not partake in regular exercise or hill walking then you should do some physical preparation beforehand. The maximum altitude on this trek is 5,545m and the average is approximately 3,900m. Ample time is given for acclimatisation, but altitude is a factor and must be considered.
As this trip spends considerable time at altitude, we ask you to refer to the altitude warning under the ‘Practical Information’ section within the Trip Notes. Mojhi’s leaders have comprehensive first aid training and carry emergency oxygen to treat altitude sickness, should this be needed.
